Applications are welcomed from: registered charities, charitable voluntary organisations, self-help groups, national charities, community services and local heritage preservers. 

In general, grants can be provided to the following:

  • charitable organisations, e.g. village halls, youth groups, playgroups, etc. (your group does not have to be a registered charity)
  • social enterprises

Some examples of the eligibility criteria are as follows: 

  • Your project will benefit people living in the Cumberland Building Society’s operating area of Cumbria, Dumfriesshire, Lancaster, Preston and Haltwhistle with a volunteer committee
  • Your organisation/group has a bank account with at least two signatories
  • Your organisation/group has a constitution or set of rules (not applicable for registered charities, faith groups, and some uniformed groups)

Donations will normally be in the region of £250 to £750, however, in exceptional circumstances, a donation of £1,000 may be awarded.

Examples of areas that are not supported are: 

  • Overseas travel
  • Events mainly for the general public such as village fetes/carnivals/concerts
  • Animal Welfare
  • Activities which are mainly/normally the responsibility of central or local government or some other responsible body
  • Fabric appeals for places of worship unless principally for the benefit of the community as a whole
  • Organisations supporting other charities
